Official Daily Action for Wednesday, May 13th, 2026
From Lauren Redfield at WA AI Regulation (WaAir):
Both the Mayor’s Office and several City Councilmembers are actively considering a temporary moratorium on new data centers in Seattle. This is a critical moment.
• We need to show up in large numbers and demonstrate overwhelming public support to encourage swift action on a moratorium.
• Seattle City Light’s service territory also extends south of Seattle (including Renton and Tukwila), and we’ll need to support similar efforts there to ensure we’re not simply shifting the burden onto neighboring communities.
ACTION: Plug in to one or more of these upcoming opportunities:
• Monday, May 18 | 6–8 PM
350 Seattle is hosting a mass meeting and potluck at the Cathy Hillenbrand Room in Capitol Hill Station (140 Broadway E.). Join us to learn about next steps and practice public comment on data centers and AI. RSVP here for the mass meeting/testimony prep.
• Wednesday, May 20 | 9:30 AM
Join us to provide public testimony at the City Council Land Use Committee meeting (the committee most likely to introduce a moratorium).
Location: Seattle City Hall, 600 4th Ave, Floor 2.
• Wednesday, May 20 | 2:00 PM
Join us for public comment at the City Council Parks + City Light Committee meeting. Seattle City Light needs to continue hearing clearly that expanding energy-intensive data centers in a region already experiencing rising energy costs is unacceptable.
Location: Seattle City Hall, 600 4th Ave, Floor 2.
BONUS: In Case You Missed It: Our friends at the Natural History Museum (based on Vashon Island) recently hosted an excellent roundtable, The Data Center Frontier, exploring AI and cloud-computing infrastructure through environmental justice and Indigenous sovereignty perspectives. You can catch the recording here!
