Trump has nominated Bill Pulte, a partisan hack with no experience in national security, to be director of national intelligence, and already appointed him as acting director. Pulte has primarily been known for using his position as head of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) to try to get Trump’s political opponents prosecuted for mortgage fraud. The appointment of such a corrupt loyalist would be a dangerous new level of politicization of the intelligence agencies, and another authoritarian slide.
At the same time, Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) is up for renewal this year, which permits collection of foreign intelligence without a warrant. Democrats should not give these powers to Pulte freely.
