The following action is adapted from Stop Surveillance City:
“The city is seeking to expand its already massive surveillance network [of CCTV cameras] – and they are hoping you won’t notice.
Surveillance is a powerful tool of social oppression and state violence. Surveillance is used to suppress social movements, criminalize communities and create pretexts to arrest, incarcerate, deport/kidnap, and disappear people. Surveillance is a powerful tool for the Fascist Trump administration.
Seattle police, city council, and Mayor Harrell have been increasing surveillance in our city targeting the same communities as Trump.
City Council and Mayor Harrell are doing this despite overwhelming opposition from the community and the city’s own Community Surveillance Working Group and Office of Civil Rights.
SPD budgeted $1.5M for the entire CCTV and RTCC pilot. The actual cost to Seattle? Over $10M in 2025 and 2026 alone and over $5.7M per year every year after that! That is money that could be going to violence interruption programs, mental health treatment, providing substance-abuse-treatment facilities, and direct income support – all interventions that, unlike CCTV and RTCC, have been found to reduce violence.”
