Official Daily Action for Friday, January 10, 2024
Seattle is in the process of updating its land use policy, known as the Comprehensive Plan. More than 2/3 of Seattle is currently zoned for single-family housing, preventing the building of badly needed townhouses and apartments in our growing city. This housing supply shortage is a huge driver of our affordability crisis, the displacement of Black Seattlites, and the homelessness crisis.
We also know that allowing for more density is good for the environment: it slows the growth of suburban sprawl outside the city, and increases the use of green public transit.
Unfortunately, anti-housing activists, representing Seattle’s wealthiest homeowners, have had an outsized voice in the zoning process, and are attempting to misusing environmental rhetoric to block even modest zoning reforms along transit routes.
Action: Email your city councilmembers, and in your own words let them know you support as much upzoning as possible to make our city affordable, equitable, and greener.
