The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) Coalition and the Fund for Women’s Equality joined forces with key lawmakers on Capitol Hill to commemorate the centennial of the ERA and announce the launch of a discharge petition for House Joint Resolution 25 (HJ Res 25). This resolution asserts the validity of the ERA and aims to remove the time limit that is currently being used to block the ERA’s addition to the U.S. Constitution.
If 218 House members sign the discharge petition HJ Res 25 will go to the floor for a vote, bypassing the Speaker and any potential obstruction. Despite the necessary 38 states having already ratified the ERA, Congress has yet to formally recognize it as part of the Constitution.
Congresswoman Jayapal has already signed and we expect Congressman Smith to as well so if you are a constituent of Rep Jayapal, we encourage you to thank her. And if you are a constituent of Rep Smith, please urge him to sign the discharge petition.
