The following action is adapted from the WA Coalition for Police Accountability:
HB 1513, “Traffic Safety For All,” ends traffic stops for expired tabs and other non-moving violations, allowing law enforcement to focus on traffic stops related to road safety issues such as impaired/distracted driving and reckless driving.
The bill creates a pool of grant money for pilot programs that help people comply with the law and fix their vehicles to avoid low-level violations. At the same time, it will reduce disproportionate impacts on communities of color and low-income people, by reducing unnecessary low-level stops and other interactions that often lead to criminal system entanglement, debt, bankruptcy, and interpersonal violence.
ACTION: Email all members of the House Community Safety, Justice & Reentry committee and ask them to Vote HB 1513 out of committee.
You can send one email to all nine members.
Talking points you can include in your email:
-
Addressing non-moving violations will keep our communities safe.
-
Low-risk traffic stops are ineffective in preventing traffic accidents and fighting crime but cause community harm.
-
No one should fear for their lives because their tabs are expired.
