OFFICIAL DAILY ACTION FOR Thursday, July 7th, 2022
In a recent ruling, the Supreme Court struck down Obama’s Clean Air Act, severely limiting the federal government’s ability to regulate greenhouse gas emissions. West Virginia v. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) both reduces the carbon emission limits set by EPA, and discourages investment in renewable energy sources. The decision further transfers the decision of whether to undertake green initiatives solely onto states. Additionally, other government bodies that attempt to impose restrictions on carbon emission could face backlash with this new precent.
With the further overstepping of the judicial branch, Congress must step up to fight for climate action. Several initiatives have been floated – tax credits for electric vehicles and funding for clean energy research – but none have yet materialized. Greenhouse gas limitations can still be placed on individual power plants. Tell your legislators to mobilize now for environmental protections.
