Last month, we asked you to call your members of Congress after Senate Republicans managed to strip $15 billion in COVID aid funding from a $1.5 trillion spending bill. Thankfully, congressional Democrats have crafted a bill that will restore most of the funding in a new piece of legislation, but this new bill will not restore any funding for international COVID relief and vaccination programs, which, as opinion writer Michelle Goldberg laid out in a scathing essay in Monday’s New York Times, is a “level of self-sabotage [that] is hard to fathom…
“Our gruesomely dysfunctional politics are going to lead to more illness and death across the globe, and we’re increasing the odds that a new viral mutation will once again upend American life.”
This is why we need to contact our members of Congress and remind them that giving in to Republican demands will only prolong the pandemic and cause untold needless suffering and death.
