In February, the House passed H.J. Resolution 46, a resolution intended to terminate the outrageous National Emergency that Trump recently declared to get his border wall built. Today (Thursday) that resolution will be put to a vote in the Senate, and it is looking like the resolution might pass. If it does, it would not only be an embarrassing rebuke to President Trump’s overreach, but it would also force him to choose between the first veto of his presidency or an end to the National Emergency.
Call your senators to support this measure, and if you know people who live in Utah, Alaska, Kentucky, or Maine, ask them to call their senators as well! Senators Susan Collins (ME), Lisa Murkowski (AK), Rand Paul (KY) and Mike Lee (UT) have all said they are likely to vote for the resolution, but we have been burned before by Republican Senators flipping their vote at the last minute. Ask your friends to call using the script below to encourage their Senators to stick to their guns and vote to end this sham of an emergency.
If you’re doing this action in the afternoon, it’s possible that the vote will have already happened – and if that’s the case, it’s still worth calling! If the resolution passes, then Trump will likely veto it, at which point we will need a 2/3 majority in both chambers to override the veto. If the veto needs overriding, your voice will count!
