Official Daily Action for Wednesday, October 11, 2023:
The Seattle Parks Department has announced plans to dismantle the Black Lives Memorial Garden (BLMG) for a turf renovation project, starting possibly on October 13. This garden was established in 2020 during protests against police violence and has since served as a community hub for food distribution, political education, and mutual aid, also helping local ecosystems with its native plants. Despite the garden’s community significance, the Parks Department, under alleged pressure from certain stakeholders, insists on its removal. When offered an alternative location at Rainier Community Center, the garden’s caretakers, Black Star Farmers, declined, citing the garden’s symbolic and historical linkage to occupation protests and community self-determination. They also criticized the Parks Department’s actions as part of a larger pattern of systemic displacement and oppression.
