Daily action for Friday, October 7th, 2022
The King County Jail in downtown Seattle has lacked potable water since Thursday, September 29, and people incarcerated at the jail have been relying on a seemingly unstable bottled water system to sustain this basic human need.
According to an email from King County Department of Adult and Juvenile Detention director Allen Nance, the department became aware of “complaints related to water quality” last week with stories of brown tap water.
“We have women in the jail who are having their period and they’re unable to get a change of underwear for the week. It’s inhumane, it’s unconstitutional, and it’s a clear liability for the county.”—Molly Gilbert, SEIU 925, King County Public Defense Chapter

Script: “Hi, my name is [NAME] and I am a resident of King County. I am {calling/writing} regarding the water supply cutoff at the King County Jail that has been going on for over a week now. The Jail is already understaffed and is cutting corners on supporting its inmates, a seriously marginalized class of citizens in America. I urge you to take immediate action on this issue and work to return the water supply to the Jail as soon as possible. Thank you.”
