The following action is adapted from our friends at the Washington Immigrant Solidarity Network (WAISN):
More than 250,000 undocumented immigrants call Washington home. These workers make substantial contributions to Washington’s economy, including paying more than $316 million each year in state and local taxes.
They are overrepresented in industries that have been decimated by the pandemic, including agriculture, restaurants, hospitality, landscaping, and construction. And they have been deprived of over $700 million in relief funding that they would have received if they were U.S. citizens. It is time for the Washington State Legislature to step up and provide relief our national leaders have sought to make inaccessible based on immigration status.
Senator Saldaña (D-37) has introduced SB 5438, which would create a program to give unemployment benefits for undocumented workers in Washington state. This is only possible because of the momentum we have built together!
But we need to show HUGE support for the bill by getting as many senators to support SB 5438!
Action: Can you email your senator to have them sign-on in support of unemployment benefits for undocumented workers? We have to act now!
