Yesterday, Gov. Inslee signed HB 1090 into law, banning private prisons from Washington State. That means that the Northwest Detention Center (NWDC) is closing its doors, thanks in large part to the tireless efforts of activists and groups like La Resistencia! We need to sieze this moment to make sure that as the NWDC shuts down, the WA residents being detained there are released to their homes instead of being transferred to another facility.
NWDC is an immigrant detention center, which means that the people currently detained there are not being detained for crimes – only for their lack of American citizenship. Keeping them in cages is wrong – so thank Gov. Inslee for shutting down NWDC, and tell him to stop the transfers and free WA residents!
