About 10,000 Washington moms lose health coverage during the “fourth trimester” or the 12-week period immediately after having a baby. Yet, pregnancy-related deaths can occur up to a year after birth, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In fact, 30% of all pregnancy-related deaths occur 43 to 365 days after delivery.
Currently, the CARES Act prevents states from dis-enrolling people from Medicaid during the current public health emergency. This means women are still protected after pregnancy — during the emergency. Passing SB 5068 would ensure continuity of care when the emergency ends.
SB 5068 will be debated in the Senate Ways & Means Committee today at 4pm.
