Today’s Action
As I write this, I can hear helicopters overhead. Last night, police sprayed peaceful protesters with chemicals. The mayor refused today to rule out tear gas tonight. Our city, and our mayor, claim to be progressive. We need to make them act that way. Today’s action is to call on local officials to make this right.
NOTE: We’ve been trying to support government offices’ social distancing by emailing instead of calling, but this is an emergency, and calls convey the urgency better than emails.
Mayor Durkan
phone: 206-684-4000
email: [email protected]
SCRIPT for Mayor Durkan:
My name is [NAME] and I’m calling from [Neighborhood]. Like many others in Seattle, I’m appalled at the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Manuel Ellis, Charleena Lyles, and too many other Black and indigenous people of color at the hands of the police. I am also appalled by the behavior of the Seattle Police in response to recent protests. Police clearly initiated violence by spraying peaceful protesters with chemicals on Monday night, maced a little girl on Saturday, and have continued to treat reasonable protests like riots. It has to stop.
I’m calling to insist that you
-
Hold the Seattle Police Department accountable for escalating tensions and perpetrating violence at the peaceful protests this week
-
Immediately discontinue the use of “flashbangs” and other grenades to control crowds, as recommended by the Community Police Commission in 2016.
-
Withdraw the motion to terminate the sustainment plan of the Consent Decree from Federal Court.
-
Release all protesters currently being held and drop charges against them
-
End the curfews
