As the horror of Trump’s zero tolerance policy wears on, there have been reports that a migrant child with a respiratory condition died shortly after being released from ICE custody, possibly due to neglect while being detained. The details are not yet known, but it is crucial that this death be thoroughly investigated.
The past week has brought two reassuring court decisions aimed at curtailing ICE’s atrocious treatment of immigrant families. On Friday, a federal judge ruled that an independent monitor must be appointed to each detention center on the Texas-Mexico border that is holding children. On Monday, a judge ruled that detention centers must stop administering psychotropic drugs to children without their parents’ consent, and further ruled that all children must be released or transferred away from the particular detention center that was found guilty of such abhorrent behavior.
If we keep making noise about this, things will keep getting better – so call your representatives and demand an investigation into ICE’s treatment of the migrant child who died shortly after being released from custody.
