Official Daily Actions for Friday, February 13
From our partners at WA Low Income Housing Alliance: The state legislative session is halfway over, and we are approaching Monday’s crucial deadline for bills to clear their chamber of origin. Bills to provide more resources to our state and local governments that would support housing justice are being considered, and we need to tell lawmakers to pass these revenue bills:
1. HB 2442/Berg: provides voters with the opportunity to pass a new local resource for affordable housing. HB 2442 provides much needed new flexibility for existing affordable housing and homelessness fund sources, while also giving local voters the opportunity to consider new funding for affordable homes. The bill includes a new local option real estate excise tax (REET) to fund affordable homes. REETs are paid by the seller of real estate and could be used to support existing affordable housing and to build much needed new, permanently affordable homes. This is critical because Washington has only 45 affordable homes for every 100 very low-income households in search of new housing, leaving many vulnerable to eviction and homelessness. Tell lawmakers that they should give local voters the opportunity to decide for themselves if this REET is right for their community.
2. SB 6346/Pederson: the “millionaires tax”, would bring in over $3 billion per year to invest in our communities to address needs including homelessness, healthcare, housing, education, and more. SB 6346 is a targeted tax on millionaires that will finally start to fix our unfair state tax system while bringing in revenue that can be used to support the countless struggling households throughout our state who are finding it harder and harder to meet their basic needs.
Big opportunity often brings big opposition, and these bills won’t pass unless people all over the state continue to speak up!
Even if you’ve done so already, please take action again today to tell your lawmakers to pass the revenue we need for our communities.
