Tell the House to OPPOSE efforts to keep the Bad Washington Privacy Act (SB 5062) alive

The following action is adapted from Indivisible Washington Plus and the Take Action Network:

The Bad Washington Privacy Act, SB 5062, is a weak industry-backed bill that does not protect Washingtonians’ privacy.

The House of Representatives adjourned on Sunday, the cutoff date for opposite chamber bills to get voted out, without giving the bill a vote, which should signal that the bill is dead for the session. But the tech lobbyists who have pushed this weak industry-backed bill aren’t giving up yet – there are rumors that they’re trying to use a legislative maneuver called NTIB (“necessary to implement in budget”) to keep it alive until the end of session (April 25).

So please, contact your legislators as soon as possible and ask them to call the Bad Washington Privacy Act done for this session!

Subject: Please OPPOSE efforts to keep the Bad Washington Privacy Act (SB 5062) alive this session

Representative [LAST NAME],

The House adjourned on Sunday without voting on SB 5062, the Bad Washington Privacy Act. This weak, industry-backed bill was opposed by community groups, immigrant rights and civil liberties organizations, and grassroots activists. However, we understand that some are trying to classify it as “necessary to implement budget” to keep the issue alive, although the deadline has passed.

Please OPPOSE all efforts to keep the bill alive.

Instead, we ask you to find time for discussions about how to achieve strong privacy protections for Washingtonians next session. The People’s Privacy Act (HB 1433) centers on people, not corporations, and has broad support from immigrant rights, civil rights, civil liberties, and consumer groups as well as grassroots activists. It’s a much better starting point for future discussions than the Bad Washington Privacy Act.
