OFFICIAL DAILY ACTION FOR FRIDAY, AUGUST 14TH
The MiChance Dunlap-Gittens Youth Rights Ordinance is pending before Seattle City Council and King County Council, which would safeguard youth’s constitutional rights by connecting them to a public defender when law enforcement is asking for youth to waive their constitutional right to remain silent or to consent to a search. Today’s action is to call your representative on the King County Council and your three representatives in the Seattle City Council to urge them to pass this ordinance.
ACTION: Call your King County rep and three City Council reps to pass the MiChance Dunlap-Gittens Youth Rights Ordinance.

Hello, my name is [NAME] and I am one of your constituents living in Seattle, [ZIPCODE]. Please pass the MiChance Dunlap-Gittens Youth Rights Ordinance, which would connect youth to a public defender when law enforcement is asking the young person to waive their constitutional right to remain silent or asking them to consent to a search. Youth, and especially Black and Indigenous youth and youth of color, are particularly vulnerable to being intimidated into waiving their Miranda rights. We must ensure that their rights are protected. Pass the Youth Rights Ordinance.
