Tell Trumpcare Stories and Stop Mass Incarceration

Every day Trump’s administration and Republicans continue to pursue policies that will harm Americans. Republicans continue to push a tax cut for the rich under the guise of healthcare reform and Trump’s Attorney General recently reversed Obama-era guidelines attempting to curtail incarceration rates. Today we urge you to take action to preserve our access to affordable healthcare and stop Attorney General Sessions from doubling down on mass incarceration.

Action 1: Tell your healthcare story

Many hoped that the version of Trumpcare produced by the Senate would be less draconian than the disastrous AHCA legislation that emerged from the House. Unfortunately, reports from the Senate indicate that its healthcare bill may be even worse, with changes to Medicaid that would force states to curtail eligibility and cut lifesaving health benefits.

In meetings with our Senators’ staffers they have repeatedly told us that the most effective help we can give them as they fight is to send them personal stories about how our lives or our families’ lives  may be affected. Personal stories are ammunition our Senators can use as they persuade or push back on Republicans. They specifically request that we send these stories in writing, rather than through phone calls. Would you or a family member lose healthcare if you lost ACA subsidies or Medicaid? Do you have a medical condition that could put your health coverage at risk?

Ways to Tell Your Story:

Method 1: Submit your (or a friend or family member’s) story to Indivisible Kirkland Kenmore’s “Virtual Rally to Save Healthcare”
http://www.indivisiblekirklandkenmore.com/virtual-rally-to-save-healthcare/
They will compile all of your stories and hand-deliver them to Senators Murray and Cantwell.

Method 2: Senator Murray’s staffer has invited Seattle Indivisible members to e-mail him directly with our healthcare stories, which he will pass on to Senator Murray:

Action 2: Push back on Sessions’ maximum punishment order

Attorney General Jeff Sessions has ordered federal prosecutors to reverse Obama-era sentencing reforms and insist on the toughest penalties possible for criminal defendants, even for non-violent drug possession. Despite a growing bi-partisan consensus that mass incarceration has cost minority communities and tax-payers far too much, Sessions appears intent on reviving the worst days of the war on drugs.

In the face of this, Virginia Representative Bobby Scott and a bipartisan group of lawmakers are pushing back by introducing a revamped version of the Safe Justice Act, to make the nation’s probation system better at keeping former prisoners out of jail, while focusing mandatory minimums on those at the top of drug rings, rather than the low-level offenders who can find themselves facing decades in prison for a first offense. Ask our representatives to co-sponsor Rep Scott’s legislation.

Rep. Pramila Jayapal:

Seattle – 206-674-0040

Rep. Adam Smith:

Renton – 425-793-5180

Script

“My name is [name], and I’m calling from [city, zip]. Attorney General Sessions’ proposed return to the era of mandatory minimum sentencing and mass incarceration for non-violent criminals is the wrong approach. Please ask Representative [name] to co-sponsor Bobby Scott’s Safe Justice Act when it is re-introduced, and reform sentencing and supervision practices, not make them more needlessly punitive.
